What's the Pat Pack?
For years KIRO FM promised the listening public a place to go on
the web to learn more about their favorite morning radio show, as
well as to express their views and get to know one another.
Just when it seemed as though nothing would ever happen, a
professional web designer and fan named Mike Shuey took matters
into his own hands and single handedly gave us all a place to go
to whet our morning show appetites. There were photos of the
cast and crew, classic audio files (provided by Darrell who now
runs the Pat Pack), and transcripts.
Soon discussions were underway between KIRO-FM and other web
designers. It looked as though the station was going to do
something, but what? Would they compensate Mike Shuey for his
work? Evidently not. Instead they hired another firm to duplicate
Mike's work. The Pat Cashman web site was taken down. Quite
understandably, Mike was not going to let anyone steal the fruits
of his labor. And that's how things remained... until March, 1999.
The fervor over a web site had once again reached a fever pitch.
Assuming that the public was going to hear more empty promises,
Darrell took his audio files that had been a staple of the Mike
Shuey site, and created a new web site - www.patcashman.com.
At the same time, 14 year old Chris in Federal Way started a new
web site and named it www.patpack.org, after KIRO-FM's meager
prize package consisting in part of gum donated by listeners.
In short order, it became evident that listeners enjoyed posting
messages on the Pat Pack's message board. At first it was rather
crude, and ran like an old VW bug hobbling along on one cylinder,
but eventually better versions came along and Chris got it running
smoothly.
Soon September arrived, and as happens every year, it was time for
those of school age to return to their studies. This meant that
Chris needed to spend more time away from the Pat Pack. It was
time to hand over the reigns... at least partially.
The reigns were handed over to Darrell, a fan of the show since
its days on KING 1090, former Mike Shuey audio file provider, and
owner of www.patcashman.com. Not long after taking over, Darrell
began redesigning the site to be more compatible, faster, and
generally more pleasant experience while still keeping the
original flavor and intent of the site.
Of course, time passes and eventually it was time for Darrell to move
on. While he continues to read the board and post occasionally, he
passed the duties of running the patpack.org website to a relative
newcomer, Ron (Lokheed on the board).
And that brings us to now. The site is healthier than ever, and thriving
due to the support of Pat's fans, and
the support of KJR 95.7 FM, home of the Pat Cashman Morning Show!
