“Mr. Clinton had better watch out if he comes down here. He better have a bodyguard.”
- Jesse Helms
Now, my memory isn't real sharp, but I don't recall Senator Helms being arrested and jailed or even questioned about his remarks. Wonder what the big difference is???

I don't see a whole lot of difference between "I hope" and "the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on Bush and lighting it." I don't see a huge and specific threat from this either: "I said God might speak to the world through a burning Bush," Humphreys testified during his trial. "I had said that before and I thought it was funny."
If he was musing about realistic plans as to how he thought he was going to get side-to-side with the prez with a gas can and a lighter, maybe I would see it as a scarier threat.

He should have been, NP. That sounds like a threat. Not that he was necessarily dangerous, but he has influence over some seriously stupid, violent people who want the South back the way it used to be.
I'll try again,---imagine that comment said about your child. Would your ears hear a different message then?
I've noticed that no one wants to go near that question.
I wonder why that would be.
(Not really.)

That you know of!
Anyway, having kids isn't really necessary to grasping my point, I don't think.

Jay, I will answer it. If it were said about my child, I sure wouldn't be happy, no matter the direction or intensity of the "threat". As a matter of fact, a neighborhood kid (or was that a neighborkid hood?) had a problem with Gen a few years back, and made comments to or about her, indicating that he was going to blow her away in some form or another (although it's been several years and I honestly can't remember the specifics). Sure, it gave me the creepies. But - it was just talk, as most of such nonsense is. We spent some time being very careful, the cloud passed, and we all passed by it too.
Was I ready to lock him up and throw away the key? Actually, no. I knew that it was very likely that it was hot air. I knew that there was essentially nothing I could do about it anyway. I knew that in this day and age, no one is safe at any time. Perhaps the bigger threat is from those who you have NO CLUE that a storm is brewing.
At any rate, I just can't see locking someone up for "blowing steam". I would certainly be happy to have it be an offense punishable by fine, if you must have some kind of legal response.
But in this particular case, with the company on various colors of security alert, I don't see "maybe someone should haul a gas can up to the president and splash him and light it" to be a plausible threat.

Okay, I'd settle for a hefty fine for the guy. Something to get it through people's head that they shouldn't be going around saying this crap. Toward anyone!
As for bully kids, I wouldn't think twice about calling the cops on them and, if necessary and possible, getting a restraining order against him to steer clear of my kin.
Mind the rules of the court, stay free. Break the rules, go to the cage. It'd be his choice. That's my version of empowering today's young people.
And if I seem a tad overly harsh toward those bully-type kids, it's because I took a lot of s**t from them when I was young. No kid should have to endure that. If I had kids, they'd all be trained in self-defense and I'd spell out the specific rules of engagement ahead of time. If it's just words, you should be able to handle it. If they lay a hand on you, go ahead and make them regret it but leave it attached.
Grrrrrr, my danders up now. Sorry. Maybe I'm one of those walking time bombs you alluded to. I've sure felt like it a time or two.
Anyway, I'm still waiting for hobya or NP to tell me how they'd feel.
In the meantime, I think I need a pill.
